GOVERNANCE & ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE
Last Updated: June 2026
PURPOSE
This document provides an overview of the organizational structure, governance approach, and operating model used by Flortyme.
Flortyme is a community-focused dance and movement organization dedicated to creating opportunities for learning, practice, social connection, personal growth, and community participation through dance and movement-based activities.
FOUNDATIONAL PRINCIPLES
Flortyme operates in accordance with its Foundational Operating Principles.
These principles guide organizational decisions, policy development, community participation, memberships, reservations, events, partnerships, and operational activities.
At the center of the Flortyme operating model is the Community Commitment Principle:
A commitment made is a commitment honored.
ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP
Flortyme was founded by Ed Lavelle and operates under a community-centered model focused on participation, collaboration, accessibility, and sustainable growth.
Organizational leadership is responsible for:
• Strategic direction
• Policy development
• Program development
• Community engagement
• Operational oversight
• Partnership development
• Resource stewardship
• Organizational administration
COMMUNITY-BASED OPERATING MODEL
Flortyme is built around collaboration and participation.
Programs, services, events, workshops, floor practice opportunities, social activities, and community initiatives may involve participation from:
• Members
• Guests
• Volunteers
• Instructors
• Organizers
• Facilitators
• Venue partners
• Independent service providers
• Community organizations
• Industry partners
Each participant contributes to the overall community experience while remaining responsible for their own activities and obligations.
MEMBERSHIP STRUCTURE
Flortyme may establish multiple membership classifications to support varying levels of participation and access.
Membership classifications may include:
• Affiliate Membership
• Club Membership
• Studio Membership
• Professional Membership
Membership benefits, booking privileges, discounts, participation opportunities, and eligibility requirements are governed by the Membership Policy.
INDEPENDENT PARTICIPATION
Unless otherwise expressly agreed in writing, instructors, organizers, facilitators, contractors, presenters, volunteers, and service providers participate independently.
Participation does not create:
• Employment
• Agency
• Partnership
• Ownership interests
• Joint ventures
• Authority to bind the organization
Independent participants remain responsible for their own activities, business practices, qualifications, and legal obligations.
PARTNERSHIPS & COLLABORATION
Flortyme values collaborative relationships with:
• Dance studios
• Community organizations
• Venues
• Instructors
• Event organizers
• Businesses
• Volunteers
• Industry professionals
• Community partners
Collaborative activities are intended to strengthen participation opportunities and support the broader dance community.
COMMUNITY COMMITMENT MODEL
A defining feature of the Flortyme operating model is the protection of established community commitments.
Once a program, event, Shared Floor Time opportunity, reservation, activity, or participation offering has been designated, published, or made available to participants, it becomes a protected community commitment.
Established commitments are not displaced for financial gain, membership status, administrative convenience, or preferential treatment.
Priority provides earlier access to available opportunities.
Priority does not provide the right to override commitments already made.
VOLUNTEER PARTICIPATION
Volunteers play an important role in supporting events, activities, community engagement, administration, and participant experiences.
Volunteer participation is governed by the Volunteer Participation Policy.
POLICY FRAMEWORK
Organizational activities are governed through a policy framework that may include:
• Foundational Operating Principles
• Membership Policy
• Floor Practice Space Policy
• Community Standards
• Refund & Cancellation Policy
• Terms & Conditions
• Safe Participation Practices
• Venue & Facility Use Policy
• Partnership & Venue Collaboration Policy
• Instructor, Organizer & Independent Service Provider Policy
• Volunteer Participation Policy
• Additional policies established from time to time
INTERPRETATION
Where uncertainty exists regarding organizational structure, governance, participation, or operational practices, the Foundational Operating Principles shall govern.
A commitment made is a commitment honored.
